What is silicone foam?
Silicone foam (also known as foamed silicone or silicone sponge) is a porous polymeric elastomer material made from raw silicone rubber as the base material. Fillers, vulcanization accelerators, foaming agents, and other raw materials are added to the mixture. After thorough mixing, the material is processed using a special high-pressure, high-temperature technique. It combines the high elasticity of silicone rubber with the porous characteristics of foam materials. Based on its foam structure, it can be classified into two main types: closed-cell (where internal air bubbles are isolated from one another) and open-cell (where internal pores are interconnected).
Core Characteristics of Silicone Foam
1. Excellent Resistance to High and Low Temperatures
Operating temperature range: -60°C to 200°C (some high-end products can reach 250°C or even 300°C)
Maintains structural integrity and elasticity even under extreme temperatures; does not become brittle or soften
2. Superior elasticity and compression recovery
When compressed by external force, the air bubbles are compressed; upon removal of the force, the material rapidly returns to its original shape
Low compression set; retains its original shape even after long-term use
High flexibility allows it to conform to complex surfaces, providing uniform cushioning
Chemical Stability and Environmental Safety
Chemical resistance: Good tolerance to acids, alkalis, salt solutions, and common organic solvents
Ageing resistance: UV-resistant, ozone-resistant, and highly weather-resistant, with a long service life (up to 10 years or more)
Environmentally friendly and non-toxic: Free of harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene; complies with strict environmental standards; some products are biocompatible
Other Key Characteristics
Excellent electrical insulation properties and high dielectric strength, suitable for electrical equipment applications
Good flame retardancy: Most products meet the UL94 V-0 flame retardancy rating, with low smoke and non-toxic properties
Lightweight and low density: Density range of 12–28 lbs./ft³ (approx. 0.19–0.45 g/cm³), reducing equipment weight
Thermal and acoustic management: The porous structure effectively blocks sound wave transmission and heat transfer, providing both sound insulation and thermal insulation
